How to Deal With a Losing Streak Without Blowing Your Account?
The short answer: losing streaks are part of trading. How you respond to them determines whether they end your account or just your week.
Why losing streaks are dangerous in prop trading
In personal trading, a losing streak hurts your balance. In prop trading, it can end your account permanently. Daily loss limits and overall drawdown rules mean there's no room to "trade your way back" through aggressive position sizing. The account closes and you start again. That's what makes the psychological response to losses so important.
What not to do
The most common mistake traders make during a losing streak is increasing their position size to recover losses faster. It feels logical – bigger trades mean quicker recovery. In practice, it compresses the margin for error at exactly the moment when your edge is least reliable. One bad trade at double size can do more damage than the entire losing streak that preceded it.
The second most common mistake is abandoning a strategy that was working. Three or four losing trades in a row can feel like evidence that something is broken. Usually it isn't. It's variance. Switching strategies mid-streak means you're now learning a new approach while already emotionally compromised – a reliable way to compound the damage.
What to do instead
Step back. Reduce position size, not increase it. Review your recent trades to check whether the losses came from rule violations or genuine strategy execution. If you followed your plan and the market went against you, that's variance – not failure.
Set a personal daily limit below the firm's limit. If Funded Guru's daily loss limit is 5%, consider stopping at 2-3%. Preserving the account for tomorrow is always more valuable than trying to recover today.
When to stop for the day
The moment trading stops feeling mechanical and starts feeling emotional, stop. Frustration, urgency, and the need to "get it back" are signals – not background noise. Log off, review the trades, and come back tomorrow.
